Ngamba Chimps
The Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary – is the only place in Uganda where there are no age limits to seeing the chimps.
This preserve is home to 52 chimpanzees, which you can interact with in their natural habitat; see them feed at 2:00 pm and watch them play with each other.
You’ll get a thrill out of touring this sanctuary on this 1-day trip while at the same time ensuring its continued existence since the money you pay will go towards the care of its orphaned chimps.
Diversity
The reptile village is home to over 40 rescued reptile species, but you’ll see approximately 20 species on display.
The biggest draw to the place is snakes, and here you’ll find the Gaboon viper, mambas, puff adders, and African rock python, which you can get the chance to lift if you’re willing with the help of a trained supervisor. Other reptiles in the village include crocodiles, monitor lizards, Jackson’s chameleon, and skinks.
A Tale of Reptiles
From the reptile village, you’ll drive to the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre, where you’ll take a boat ride to Ngamba Island. But before doing so, you’ll tour the Entebbe Zoo to see the different animals that live there, like elephants, buffalos, lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras, and ostrich.

- Entebbe – Ngamba Chimps Island
At 12:00 pm, you’ll take a boat ride from the L.Victoria shores at the Uganda Wildlife Education Centre pier across the equator to Chimps Island. Along the way, you’ll see plenty of birds, such as Cattle egrets and Cormorants.
Upon arriving at Ngamba Island, you’ll be welcomed by the Monitor lizards and about 20 species of birds, like the weaver birds that loiter along the shores. Then, go to the visitors’ center to learn about the Ngamba Sanctuary project and its history before enjoying your lunch on the Island. - Chimpanzee Feeding Experience
After lunch, you’ll help the caregivers to prepare the food for the chimpanzees and possibly get to feed them while delighting in their antics of seeking your attention for more food.
The chimps get fed from a raised platform along the sanctuary fence on fruits like apples, pineapples, tomatoes, carrots, etc. These foods are offered to the chimpanzees to supplement their diet since the food they forage from the surrounding forest is insufficient. - Tour the Ngamba Island
With the exciting experience of watching the chimps feed over, you’ll take a walk to a fishing village on the island to watch the fishermen as they do their work. And upon returning to the sanctuary, visit the gift shop where you can buy souvenirs and gifts for loved ones before leaving Ngamba. - Ngamba Island – Equator – Entebbe
You’ll take a boat ride back to Entebbe, stopping over at the equator to witness the North and South Pole forces trying to keep the boat in place, and it’s with more power that the boat will cross the equator line. Those interested in swimming at the equator will also get the opportunity to do so for a short while before proceeding to the Zoo pier. - Entebbe – Kampala
Your driver will then take you back to your residence/hotel, marking an end to this 1-day Ngamba Island Chimps tour.
